         โอลิมปัส รุดตลาดกล้อง D-SLR อีกครั้ง โดยการเปิดตัวกล้องดิจิตอล SLR รุ่นใหม่ในชื่อ E-500 ปรับปรุงมาจาก E-300 โดยใช้เซ็นเซอร์ภาพ CCD 4/3 ความละเอียด 8 ล้านพิกเซลเท่าเดิม แต่ออกแบบตัวกล้องใหม่ และเพิ่มขีดความสามารถให้สูงขึ้น เช่น ใช้จอมอนิเตอร์ LCD ขนาดใหญ่ 2.5 นิ้ว เซ็นเซอร์วัดแสงออกแบบใหม่ช่วงความไวแสง ISO สูงมี Noise ต่ำ วางจำหน่ายพร้อมเลนส์ซูม 14-45 มม.ในราคาประมาณ 799 ดอลล่าร์สหรัฐ (ราคาที่อเมริกา) ประมาณปลายเดือนตุลาคมนี้

          E-500 มีขนาดที่เล็ก กะทัดรัดเพียง 130 x 95 x 66 มม.น้ำหนักบอดี้รวมแบตเตอรี่ 479  กรัม ออกแบบเน้นการใช้งานง่าย มีโหมดบันทึกภาพสำเร็จรูปให้เลือกมากถึง 21 แบบ รวมทั้งโหมดบันทึกภาพ มาตรฐาน P/S/A/M จอมอนิเตอร์ LCD แบบไฮบริจขนาด 2.5 นิ้ว ความละเอียด 215,250 พิกเซล มีฟิลเตอร์ซุปเปอร์โซนิคช่วยป้องกันฝุ่นจับหน้าเซ็นเซอร์ภาพ ระบบวัดแสงใหม่แบ่งพื้นที่ 49 ส่วน แบบ Digital ESP, เฉลี่ยหนักกลางและเฉพาะจุด ถ่ายภาพต่อเนื่อง 2.5 เฟรม/วินาที เมื่อเลือกไฟล์ภาพแบบ HQ หรือ SQ JPEG และใช้การ์ดความเร็วสูง เช่น Sandisk Extreme III จะถ่ายภาพต่อเนื่องได้จนเมมโมรี่การ์ดเต็ม หน่วยประมวลผลภาพความเร็วสูงแบบ True Pic TURBO มีช่องใส่การ์ดแบบคู่คือ CF/ Micro drive และ XD Picture Card เลนส์เม้าท์แบบ E-System

          E-500 มีโครงสร้างบอดี้ที่เป็นพลาสติกชนิดพิเศษ เลือกไฟล์ฟอร์แมทได้ 3 แบบคือ RAW,TIFF และJPEG (3 ระดับ) เลือก RAW +JPEG ได้เลนส์ที่ใช้คูณทางยาวโฟกัสเพิ่ม 2 เท่า (เทียบกับกล้องฟิล์ม 35 มม.) ระบบออโต้ โฟกัสแบบทีระภาพ,ต่อเนื่องและแมนนวล ปรับความไวแสงออโต้ ISO 100-400 หรือเลือกเองสูงสุด ISO  1600 ล็อคความจำแสงและถ่ายภาพคร่อมได้ชดเชยแสง +/-5EV  ความเร็วชัตเตอร์สูง 60-1/4000 วินาที และ B สัมพันธ์แฟลชที่ความเร็วชัตเตอร์สู.สุด 1/180 วินาที ปรับไวท์บาลานซ์ ออโต้ หรือเลือกเองตามสภาพแสง 7 แบบ เลือกปรับอุณหภูมิสี 2,000-10,000 องศาเคลวิน หรือ แบบคัสตอม ถ่ายภาพคร่อมไวท์บาลานซ์ได้ มีโหมดสี 2 แบบคือ sRGB และ Adobe RGB แฟลชในตัวไกด์นัมเบอร์ 13 แบบ TTL และแมนนวล พร้อมโหมดแฟลชแก้ตาแดง สัมพันธ์แฟลชกับม่านชัตเตอร์ชุดหลังและสัมพันธ์กับความเร็วชัตเตอร์ต่ำ ใช้ร่วมกับแฟลชเฉพาะกิจภายนอกของโอลิมปัสได้รุ่น FL-20,FL-36 และ FL-50 ช่องมองภาพแบบ TTL ผ่านเลนส์ มองเห็นภาพ 95 % เปิดชมทีละภาพหรือภาพเล็ก 4,9,16,และ 25 ภาพ อินเทอร์เฟส USB 2.0 (ความเร็วเท่ากับ USB 1.1) ไม่มีกริปถ่ายภาพแนวตั้ง พลังงานใช้แบตเตอรี่ ลิเธี่ยม-ไอออน BLM-1 ขนาด 1,500 มิลลิแอมป์ ปัจจุบันมีเลนส์ให้เลือก 16 ตัว โดยมีเลนส์ใหม่ 7 ตัว คือ 14-35 มม.,17.5-45 มม.,18-180 มม.,35-100 มม.F2.0 ,90-250 มม.F2.8, 8 มม.
