นกหัวขวานด่างท้องน้ำตาล Rufous-bellied Woodpecker นกหัวขวานด่างท้องน้ำตาลแดง มีขนาด 23 ซม. ด้านบนลำตัวเป็นแถบสีดำสลับสีขาว แก้ม คอและด้านล่างลำตัวสีน้ำตาลแดง ใต้โคนหางสีแดง ตัวผู้ขนด้านบนหัวสีแดงสด ตัวเมีย ขนด้านบนหัวสีดำมีจุดเป็นลายสีขาว นกหัวขวานด่างท้องน้ำตาลแดง มักไต่หากินตามต้นไม้อย่างคล่องแคล่ว โดยเริ่มจากโคนต้นแล้ววนขึ้นไป เมื่อถึงยอดก็จะบินต่อไปยังต้นอื่น โดยมีลักษณะคล้ายลอนคลื่น เพราะใช้การกะพือปีกและร่อนเป็นช่วงสั้นๆสลับกัน ขณะบินจะส่งเสียงร้องดัง เวลาหากินจะใช้ปากเจาะเข้าไปในต้นไม้ทั้งที่ยังสดและตายแล้ว พร้อมกับใช้ลิ้นที่ยาวซึ่งมีน้ำลายเหนียวและหนามแหลมยื่นยาวออกไปจับตัวแมลงและตวัดเข้าสู่ปาก อาหาร ได้แก่ แมลงและหนอน ทำรังตามโพรงไม้โดยใช้ปากเจาะเข้าไป วางไข่ครั้งละ 2-3 ฟอง นกหัวขวานด่างท้องน้ำตาลแดง เป็นนกประจำถิ่นที่พบได้ไม่บ่อย อาศัยอยู่ทางภาคเหนือและภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ในบริเวณที่เป็นป่าโปร่ง มีต้นโอ้ก ต้นสน ขึ้นอยู่ |
