นกหัวขวานสีตาล Rufous Woodpecker นกหัวขวานสีตาล มีขนาด 25 ซม. ลำตัวสีน้ำตาลแดง มีลายสีดำด้านบนลำตัว ท้องและหาง กระหม่อมมีหงอนสั้นๆ ตัวผู้มีจุดแดงที่แก้ม นกหัวขวานสีตาล มักไต่หากินตามต้นไม้อย่างคล่องแคล่ว โดยเริ่มจากโคนต้นแล้ววนขึ้นไป เมื่อถึงยอดก็จะบินต่อไปยังต้นอื่น โดยมีลักษณะคล้ายลอนคลื่น เพราะใช้การกะพือปีกและร่อนเป็นช่วงสั้นๆสลับกัน ขณะบินจะส่งเสียงร้องดัง เวลาหากินจะใช้ปากเจาะเข้าไปในต้นไม้ทั้งที่ยังสดและตายแล้ว พร้อมกับใช้ลิ้นที่ยาวซึ่งมีน้ำลายเหนียวและหนามแหลมยื่นยาวออกไปจับตัวแมลงและตวัดเข้าสู่ปาก อาหาร ได้แก่ แมลงและหนอน ทำรังตามโพรงไม้โดยใช้ปากเจาะเข้าไป วางไข่ครั้งละ 2-3 ฟอง นกหัวขวานสีตาล เป็นนกประจำถิ่น ที่พบได้ทั่วไป อาศัยตามชายป่าผสมผลัดใบ ป่าดงดิบและป่าละเมาะ ตั้งแต่ที่ราบจนถึงระดับความสูง 900 เมตร มักพบเห็นอยู่ตามยอดของต้นไม้สูง |
