นกหัวขวานหัวเหลือง Pale-headed Woodpecker นกหัวขวานหัวเหลือง มีขนาด 28 ซม. ปากยาวตรงแข็งแรง นิ้วเท้ายาวและมีเล็บแหลมคม สำหรับเกาะเปลือกไม้และแกนกลางหางที่แข็งคอยค้ำพยุงลำตัวอีกด้วย ด้านบนลำตัวสีน้ำตาลแดงปนสีเลือดนก ด้านล่างลำตัวสีเขียวอมเหลือง ตัวผู้ กระหม่อมสีแดง ตัวเมีย กระหม่อมสีดำ นกหัวขวานหัวเหลือง มักไต่หากินตามต้นไม้อย่างคล่องแคล่ว โดยเริ่มจากโคนต้นแล้ววนขึ้นไป เมื่อถึงยอดก็จะบินต่อไปยังต้นอื่น โดยมีลักษณะคล้ายลอนคลื่น เพราะใช้การกะพือปีกและร่อนเป็นช่วงสั้นๆสลับกัน ขณะบินจะส่งเสียงร้องดัง เวลาหากินจะใช้ปากเจาะเข้าไปในต้นไม้ทั้งที่ยังสดและตายแล้ว พร้อมกับใช้ลิ้นที่ยาวซึ่งมีน้ำลายเหนียวและหนามแหลมยื่นยาวออกไปจับตัวแมลงและตวัดเข้าสู่ปาก อาหาร ได้แก่ แมลงและหนอน ทำรังตามโพรงไม้โดยใช้ปากเจาะเข้าไป วางไข่ครั้งละ 2-3 ฟอง นกหัวขวานหัวเหลือง เป็นนกประจำถิ่นที่พบได้ยากมาก อาศัยทางภาคเหนือสุด ตามป่าดิบและป่าไผ่ |
