นกหัวขวานหลังสีส้ม Orange-backed Woodpecker นกหัวขวานหลังสีส้ม มีขนาด 30 ซม.ตัวผู้ ปีกและหางสีน้ำตาลดำ มีแถบสีส้มอมเหลืองเป็นริ้วที่ปีก หน้า หลังและตะโพกสีส้มอมเหลือง หน้าอก ท้องและหงอนบนหัวเป็นสีแดง ตัวเมีย มีหงอนเป็นสีดำ หน้าและด้านล่างลำตัวสีน้ำตาลเทา หลังและตะโพกสีขาว นกหัวขวานหลังสีส้ม ชอบกินตัวหนอนตามต้นไม้ โดยใช้ปากเจาะเนื้อไม้แล้วแลบลิ้นยาวเข้าไปเลียจับเอาตัวหนอนออกมากิน นกหัวขวานหลังสีส้ม เป็นนกประจำถิ่น ทางภาคใต้ตอนล่าง อาศัยตามป่าดงดิบ พวกป่าสัก ป่าเต็งรัง จนถึงระดับ 700 เมตร โดยมากอาศัยในระดับต่ำๆ |
