นกหัวขวานแคระจุดรูปหัวใจ Heart-spotted Woodpecker นกหัวขวานแคระจุดรูปหัวใจ มีขนาด 15 ซม. หัวและด้านบนลำตัวสีดำ มีหงอนที่กระหม่อม คอและแถบปีกตอนบนเป็นสีขาว มีจุดดำเป็นรูปหัวใจ ตัวผู้ หน้าผากมีลายขีดสีขาวอมเหลือง ตัวเมียหน้าผากเป็นสีขาว นกหัวขวานแคระจุดรูปหัวใจ มักไต่หากินตามต้นไม้อย่างคล่องแคล่ว โดยเริ่มจากโคนต้นแล้ววนขึ้นไป เมื่อถึงยอดก็จะบินต่อไปยังต้นอื่น โดยมีลักษณะคล้ายลอนคลื่น เพราะใช้การกะพือปีกและร่อนเป็นช่วงสั้นๆสลับกัน ขณะบินจะส่งเสียงร้องดัง เวลาหากินจะใช้ปากเจาะเข้าไปในต้นไม้ทั้งที่ยังสดและตายแล้ว พร้อมกับใช้ลิ้นที่ยาวซึ่งมีน้ำลายเหนียวและหนามแหลมยื่นยาวออกไปจับตัวแมลงและตวัดเข้าสู่ปาก อาหาร ได้แก่ แมลงและหนอน ทำรังตามโพรงไม้โดยใช้ปากเจาะเข้าไป วางไข่ครั้งละ 2-3 ฟอง นกหัวขวานแคระจุดรูปหัวใจ เป็นนกประจำถิ่นพบได้ทั่วไป ตามป่าเบญจพรรณและป่าดงดิบ บริเวณชายป่า ตั้งแต่ที่ราบจนถึงระดับความสูง 900 เมตร |
