นกหัวขวานใหญ่สีเทา มีขนาด 50 ซม. ขนเกือบทั่วตัวมีสีเทาเป็นสีเรียบไม่มีลาย ที่คอมีสีเหลืองซีด ตัวผู้จากโคนปากจะมีแถบแดงเล็กๆอยู่เล็กน้อยซึ่งตัวเมียไม่มี นกหัวขวานใหญ่สีเทา ชอบออกหากินอยู่ตามป่าต่ำและบริเวณชายป่า เป็นนกที่บินได้เก่งและสามารถบินได้เป็นระยะทางไกลๆ ชอบอยู่รวมกันเป็นฝูง มักบินตามกันจากต้นไม้ต้นหนึ่งไปยังต้นไม้อีกต้นหนึ่ง ขณะบินจะส่งเสียงร้องดังมาก ชอบกินหนอนต่างๆเป็นอาหาร นกหัวขวานใหญ่สีเทา พบอาศัยอยู่ทั่วทุกภาคยกเว้นภาคกลาง
