นกหัวขวานคอลาย Checker-throated Woodpecker นกหัวขวานคอลาย มีขนาด 28ซม.มีหงอนสีเขียวปลายหงอนสีเหลือง ลำตัวสีเขียว ปีกสีน้ำตาลแดงปนสีเลือดนก คอสีน้ำตาลปนแดง ใต้คางสีขาวมีลายสีดำ ตัวผู้มีลายขาวสลับดำใต้คอมากกว่าตัวเมีย นกหัวขวานคอลาย มักไต่หากินตามต้นไม้อย่างคล่องแคล่ว โดยเริ่มจากโคนต้นแล้ววนขึ้นไป เมื่อถึงยอดก็จะบินต่อไปยังต้นอื่น โดยมีลักษณะคล้ายลอนคลื่น เพราะใช้การกะพือปีกและร่อนเป็นช่วงสั้นๆสลับกัน ขณะบินจะส่งเสียงร้องดัง เวลาหากินจะใช้ปากเจาะเข้าไปในต้นไม้ทั้งที่ยังสดและตายแล้ว พร้อมกับใช้ลิ้นที่ยาวซึ่งมีน้ำลายเหนียวและหนามแหลมยื่นยาวออกไปจับตัวแมลงและตวัดเข้าสู่ปาก อาหาร ได้แก่ แมลงและหนอน ทำรังตามโพรงไม้โดยใช้ปากเจาะเข้าไป วางไข่ครั้งละ 2-3 ฟอง นกหัวขวานคอลาย เป็นนกประจำถิ่นพบได้ไม่บ่อยนัก ทางภาคใต้ตอนล่าง อาศัยตามป่าดงดิบ ในระดับความสูงต่ำกว่า 1000 เมตร |
