นกหัวขวานแดงหลังลาย Bay Woodpecker นกหัวขวานแดงหลังลาย มีขนาด 30 ซม.มีปากยาวใหญ่สีเหลืองจางๆ ด้านบนลำตัวสีน้ำตาลแดงสลับกับแถบสีดำเป็นลายขวาง ด้านล่างลำตัวสีน้ำตาล ตัวผู้มีแถบสีแดงข้างคอ นกหัวขวานแดงหลังลาย มักไต่หากินตามต้นไม้อย่างคล่องแคล่ว โดยเริ่มจากโคนต้นแล้ววนขึ้นไป เมื่อถึงยอดก็จะบินต่อไปยังต้นอื่น โดยมีลักษณะคล้ายลอนคลื่น เพราะใช้การกะพือปีกและร่อนเป็นช่วงสั้นๆสลับกัน ขณะบินจะส่งเสียงร้องดัง เวลาหากินจะใช้ปากเจาะเข้าไปในต้นไม้ทั้งที่ยังสดและตายแล้ว พร้อมกับใช้ลิ้นที่ยาวซึ่งมีน้ำลายเหนียวและหนามแหลมยื่นยาวออกไปจับตัวแมลงและตวัดเข้าสู่ปาก อาหาร ได้แก่ แมลงและหนอน ทำรังตามโพรงไม้โดยใช้ปากเจาะเข้าไป วางไข่ครั้งละ 2-3 ฟอง นกหัวขวานแดงหลังลาย เป็นนกประจำถิ่นที่พบได้ไม่บ่อย อาศัยอยู่ทางภาคเหนือและภาคตะวันตก ตามป่าดงดิบในระดับความสูง 600-1200 เมตร |
