นกหัวขวานแดงลาย Banded Woodpecker นกหัวขวานแดงลาย มีขนาด 25 ซม.หงอนสีแดง ปลายหงอนสีเหลือง ปีกสีน้ำตาลแดง ลำตัวสีน้ำตาล มีขีดขวางสีดำตลอดลำตัว ตัวผู้มีสีแดงเรื่อๆที่แก้ม นกหัวขวานแดงลาย มักไต่หากินตามต้นไม้อย่างคล่องแคล่ว โดยเริ่มจากโคนต้นแล้ววนขึ้นไป เมื่อถึงยอดก็จะบินต่อไปยังต้นอื่น โดยมีลักษณะคล้ายลอนคลื่น เพราะใช้การกะพือปีกและร่อนเป็นช่วงสั้นๆสลับกัน ขณะบินจะส่งเสียงร้องดัง เวลาหากินจะใช้ปากเจาะเข้าไปในต้นไม้ทั้งที่ยังสดและตายแล้ว พร้อมกับใช้ลิ้นที่ยาวซึ่งมีน้ำลายเหนียวและหนามแหลมยื่นยาวออกไปจับตัวแมลงและตวัดเข้าสู่ปาก อาหาร ได้แก่ แมลงและหนอน ทำรังตามโพรงไม้โดยใช้ปากเจาะเข้าไป วางไข่ครั้งละ 2-3 ฟอง นกหัวขวานแดงลาย เป็นนกประจำถิ่นพบได้ไม่บ่อยนัก ทางภาคใต้ ตามป่าดงดิบ ป่าชั้นสอง ส่วนใหญ่หากินในระดับความสูงต่ำกว่า 900 เมตร |
